Softball Takes Two From Drew; Mitloff Sets Single-Game Record for Stolen Bases

Weehawken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team took down in-state rival Drew University in both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Allison Mitloff set the single-game record for stolen bases in game two, swiping five bags. The Ducks (20-12) won 7-3 in game one before clipping the Rangers (20-14) in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks wasted little time in the opener, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first. Mitloff and Carmelita Murphy-Brown singled to left field with one out before pitcher Jessica Hsu helped out her own cause and belted a three-run home run to dead center field for the 3-0 lead.

The Ducks padded their lead in the third with three additional tallies. Emma Quattrochi singled to lead off the inning and, after two outs, Hsu worked a five-pitch walk. Isabela Lipsky was up next and crushed a three-run home run to right-center, extending the lead to 6-0. Hsu was magnificent over the first five frames, allowing just one baserunner that came on an error.

The Rangers broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the sixth and, two batters later, made it 6-2 with a two-run homer. They tacked on an additional tally in the frame, scoring on a two-out RBI single. Stevens added to their lead in the sixth after Kacey DiPasquale led off with a double down the left field line. After moving to third on a ground ball, DiPasquale crossed the plate on an RBI knock from Riley Lawrence. Drew put a runner on base in the seventh, but the game ended as a ball hit a runner for the final out.

Much like the opener, Stevens got on the board with its first at-bat of game two. Mitloff walked and stole second before Murphy-Brown reached on an infield single. On the next pitch, Murphy-Brown broke for second and, on the throw down, Mitloff came scampering home. The Rangers tied the game in the third, scoring on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Stevens regained its lead in the third, as Mitloff led off with an infield knock. After swiping second and moving to third on a groundout, Hsu drove her home with a sacrifice fly to right field. The home side doubled its lead in the fourth, with DiPasquale and Isabelle Won leading off with singles. With runners on the corners, Won was thrown out trying to steal, but DiPasquale came home on an errant throw.

Kyra Fischer set the Rangers down 1-2-3 in the fifth and got through the sixth despite allowing two hits. Stevens loaded the bases in the sixth on singles by Won, Adrianna Albano, and Lilian Cournoyer with one out but was unable to capitalize. Fischer got the first two outs in the seventh, but Drew loaded the bases on a pair of errors and a walk. The senior worked out of it, fanning the final hitter to complete the sweep.
