Softball Clipped by Manhattanville in Doubleheader

Weehawken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Ducks (22-14) fell 4-1 and 8-5 to the Valiants (23-7).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens had two runners on base in each of the first two frames of game one but was unable to capitalize. In the second, Madison DiSarno walked to lead off the inning and, after a wild pitch, moved to third on a single by Isabelle Won. The Ducks were unable to score, however, as the next two hitters were retired. Stevens broke through in the third when Allison Mitloff led off with a single. After she swiped second, Carmelita Murphy-Brown roped a double to left-center, plating Mitloff for the first run of the game.

The Valiants tied the game in the fourth, with all four runs coming with two outs. The big blow came on a three-run home run to center field that just evaded the leap of Mitloff. Walks to Riley Lawrence and Emma Quattrochi put two on in the fourth, but Stevens could not answer. The same thing happened in the sixth on singles from Lilian Cournoyer and Quattrochi. A fielder's choice closed out that inning, but Stevens had one final chance in the seventh. Murphy-Brown and Jessica Hsu singled to lead off the frame, but a fielder's choice accounted for the first out. The Valiants then recorded consecutive pop-outs to end game one in their favor.

Stevens opened the scoring in the bottom of the second in game two, as Won and Kacey DiPasquale led off with singles. Two batters later, Quattrochi walked to load the bases, and Mitloff followed with a walk of her own to force home Won. Murphy-Brown was up next and reached on an infield single, plating two more runners. Manhattanville got a run back in the third on an RBI single and added two more in the fourth, including an unearned run. Stevens answered with a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Cournoyer walked and moved up on a Lawrence sacrifice bunt before scoring on a two-out double from Mitloff. Murphy-Brown followed with a single to right field, scoring the speedy Mitloff.

After a scoreless fifth, the Valiants broke the game open with five runs in the sixth. With runners on second and third and one out, Manhattanville scored two runs on a muffed throw to tie the game before an RBI single made it 6-5. The following batter doubled, extending the lead to 8-5. The Ducks had runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to capitalize, and Manhattanville came away with the sweep.
