Amherst, Mass. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team picked up a strong 18-6 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Championships Saturday afternoon from the campus of Amherst College.
Maddie Hogan finished with more points (seven) than the Monks had goals.
Abby O'Brien had a hat trick and four points,
Alina Friz and
Adeline Obitz each had three-point days,
Elise Hensley and
Stefanie Sellitto each scored twice, and
Colleen Ginsberg &
Kamryn Kramer each had two-point days for the Ducks, rounding out the team's multi-point scorers
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Monks actually struck first, but two goals each from Friz and Hogan less than 2:15 apart put the Ducks up 4-1 less than six minutes off the opening draw. The Monks got a goal back, but Stevens (16-4) tallied the final four goals of the first quarter and first three of the second, blowing the game open early; Hogan tallied three, Sellitto added two, and O'Brien's added a pair of her own during the extended 7-0 spurt. The Monks ended a 19-minute scoring drought, briefly delaying the 10-goal running clock, but O'Brien and Obitz made it 13-3 in the final minute of the half.
Stevens answered two straight from the Monks to open the second half with the next three, holding a 16-5 lead at the end of the third quarter. Hensley scored two in a row to re-activate the running clock, and
Callie Slabaugh added an insurance goal for the final tally of the period.
The pace slowed in the fourth quarter, to the tune of just six shots combined, but the Ducks made both of theirs count, with Ginsberg and Kramer adding the final two goals of the game.
