Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team battled No. 14 TCNJ to a scoreless draw Wednesday night at DeBaun Athletic Complex in a match featuring several close calls and near-misses.
The Ducks (0-4-3) became the first team to hold the Lions without a goal this season, holding TCNJ (4-0-2) to their second-lowest shot and lowest shots on goal totals of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
At the start of the eighth minute,
Kaitlyn Pettit had a shot blocked that bounced right to
Molly McCann at the top of the 18-yard box. McCann put one on-target, but TCNJ keeper Ellen Williams was well-positioned for the save. After TCNJ had a shot bang off the crossbar in the 24
th minute, McCann had another look in the 32
nd, but Williams was again well-positioned, grabbing McCann's attempt, the final of the half for either side.
The Lions had the first good look of the second half, but a shot in traffic from inside 10 yards sailed over the crossbar; that was the first of four shots from the Lions in a 10-minute span that produced a pair of saves from Stevens keeper
Maria O'Brien, the second one coming on a shot directly off a corner kick in the 57
th minute.
Barely a minute later, the Ducks briefly had a 2-on-1 opportunity, but were unable to muster a shot on the rush. Less than a minute after that,
Alana Odom had perhaps Stevens' strongest chance of the night when she used some nifty footwork to create space at the top of the 18-yard box just right of the near-side post. The reigning MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Year fired a shot for the top right corner that had goal written all over it until Williams dove and pushed it wide.
In the 86
th minute, O'Brien delivered her finest save of the night, making a leaping save on a shot from about 15 yards out, the final on-target look of the night for either side.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- O'Brien made her second straight start and set a new career-high with five saves
- McCann and Taylor Truglia both played the full 90 for the third straight match; Teagan Shay played the full 90 for the first time
- Stevens and TCNJ have now played to draws in each of the last three seasons
