On January 20, 2011, Director of Athletics Russell Rogers announced the hiring of Emily Beach as the second head coach in Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey history. Beach, a former assistant coach at the University of Maryland (College Park) and Georgetown University, will take over a program heading into its eighth season and coming off its third NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship appearance.
“Emily brings a wealth of field hockey knowledge and experience to Stevens,” Rogers said. “She was immensely successful as a student-athlete and has the teaching and coaching background that is the perfect fit for our program. Our field hockey team has seen much success over the last several years and I am confident that under Emily’s guidance, we will continue to improve and establish ourselves on a national level.”
A two-year starter at Maryland, Beach led the 2005 Terrapins to both the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and National Championship as a team captain. She was named a first-team National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American and was also a member of the ’05 NCAA All-Tournament team. The Terrapins also reached the national semifinals in 2004.
Beach was the 2001 Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year and was honored as the Player of the Decade in 2010.
After graduating with of Bachelor of Science in Community Health in 2006, Beach was an assistant coach it her alma mater and helped that group win the National Championship for the second time in as many years.
In 2007, Beach became an assistant at Georgetown University where she was responsible for practice planning and implementation both on the team and individual levels and played a large role in recruiting. She edited and analyzed video footage using GameBreaker, and also managed all administrative operations of the program.
In addition to her coaching duties, the Bethesda, Md. native was the Director of Field Hockey at Champions of Tomorrow. She coached U19 club teams, oversaw coaches and athletes at all levels, as well as organizing, staffing, and running all camps and clinics.
In January of 2007, Beach invented Dribble Dr., a training stick with a now-proven record of teaching proper dribbling technique while improving hand speed and forearm strength.
At Stevens, Beach will take over a team that has won the Empire 8 title each of the last three seasons and has an overall record of 60-26 over that span. She replaces Jessica Roach, who coached the Ducks during the program’s first seven years of existence.
