Ushering in a new era for the field hockey program at Stevens Institute of Technology, head field hockey coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz announced the hiring of Maura Johnston as the first full-time assistant coach in Stevens field hockey history in July of 2018.

“I am extremely excited to welcome Mo to the Stevens field hockey family,” said Coach Spencer-Blaetz. “She has played and coached at a high level and is prepared to help take this team to the next level as the first ever full-time assistant. Her dedication and passion were evident throughout the interview process and I know that she will be an asset to our team and the entire department.”

Johnston was most recently a graduate assistant coach at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She was part of the 2017 Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year as the Cardinals had the most players in program history named to the all-conference team this past season.

She also served on the coaching staff at her alma mater, Montclair State University, in the spring of 2016 and was a coach at the USA Field Hockey Futures Tournament, South East Storm Field Hockey Club and McDaniel College, Misericordia University and Sandy Sticks field hockey camps.

Johnston was a four-year starter at Montclair State, where she led the Red Hawks to their first-ever NJAC Conference Championships in 2012 and 2013. Montclair marched all the way to the NCAA Championship Game in 2012. She was First-Team All-NJAC and selected for the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game.

Johnston earned a Master of Science degree from Catholic in May 2018, with a capstone research project titled: What can the NCAA do to recruit and retain more female college coaches? A study to increase diversity in intercollegiate athletics. She also owns a Bachelor of Science degree from Montclair State with a major in health and physical education.
