Joe Stahley enters his sixth year as the head coach of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s golf team in 2009-10. Stahley has been at Stevens since 1988 and, in addition to his coaching duties, currently serves as the Assistant Vice President for Student Development. He was formally appointed head men's golf coach in April 2006, when the team reached full varsity status.
Stahley has been instrumental in the development of the Stevens golf team, which started out as a club sport in 2004. Since then, he has spent considerable time building the foundation of the program and overseeing its transition from club to varsity.
In 2008-09, Stahley guided his team to eight Top-5 finishes, including taking 4th in the Empire 8 Championships. Stevens produced their first-ever All-Empire 8 player in 2009, and for the second straight season a Stevens Duck took home the Empire 8’s Sportsman of the Year award. In addition, one of Stahley’s Ducks posted the lowest round ever by a Stevens golfer when Tom Merriam shot a 71 at the Empire 8 Championships in 2008.
During the 2007-08 campaign, the Ducks excelled in their second season at the varsity level. The Ducks finished second in their Stevens-Opener at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course in March. In addition, Stahley led the team to a fourth-place showing at the Empire 8 Golf Championship in April. Along the way, Stevens produced an Empire 8 second-team all star in senior Tom Merriam.
Nine different members of the 2007-08 team posted new individual records or contributed to a team record. Furthermore, the team scoring record dropped three different times during the season from 330 to 329, to 324, and finally to the current record of 319.
Prior to accepting his assignment as assistant vice president in 2002, Stahley served as the Director of Career Development and Cooperative Education. Before coming to Stevens, Stahley was employed at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J.
As an assistant vice president, Stahley has management responsibilities for Student Life, Health and Counseling Services, Campus Safety, Career Development, Cooperative Education and International Students.
