Born in St. Paul, Minn., Welsh attended Purdue University where he earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1994. While at Purdue, he began competitive training that would be the basis for his pursuit of a career as a professional tri-athlete.
In 1994, Welsh accepted a position as an Environmental Engineer at ADS Environmental Services in San Diego, Calif. In 1999, he accepted a position as an Environmental Engineer for the County of San Mateo, Calif., while officially beginning his professional career in tri-athlete competition.
In the fall of 1999, Welsh accepted a position as Aquatics Director of the San Francisco Bay Club where he served for two years prior to moving to New York City. While at the Bay Club, he was instrumental in developing a children's instructional program and a Masters Swim Team. While in San Francisco, Welsh swam competitively with the Burlingame Aquatic Masters under the tutelage of famed instructor Doug Huestis.
Welsh has participated in over 100 triathlons worldwide. His professional career includes three Top Ten finishes including a victory at Donner Lake, Calif. in 2000.
A contender for the 2004 Olympic Trials, Welsh resides in Manhattan and rides his skateboard to work.
