Jim Carpenter is in his 15th season as the head coach of the Stevens’ men’s fencing program and third year as the women's head coach. Entering the 2023-24 season, Carpenter has career record of 280-159 on the men's side and is the winningest coach in program history. Since taking over the women's program in 2022, Carpenter has posted a 51-61 mark. He has led the men's side to NCAA Championship appearances in 2014-15 and 2018-19.

Carpenter also led Stevens to the MACFA Foil and Epee weapon championships in 2014 as well as the Epee weapon title in 2019-20. Under Carpenter's watch, 2015 alum Logan Koester become the program’s first NCAA All-American since the 1957 season in 2014-15.

Jim Stevens HC

  • Helped the Ducks win a program-record 37 matches in the 2019-20 season 
  • Carpenter holds the program record for wins after being on Castle Point for less than nine years
  • Started the 2019-20 season 25-0, the best start and the longest winning streak in program history
  • Coached Stevens to a 23rd-place finish in the 2015 NCAA Championships, the best finish for the Ducks since 1968 
  • Has won three MACFA weapon titles in his time with the Ducks
  • Produced a total of five top-three team finishes at the MACFA Championships in his first eighth seasons, including a runner-up finish in 2013-14 
  • Produced a pair of NCAA Championship qualifiers in Wolfe Crouse (2018-19) and Logan Koester (2014-15), the first NCAA Championship qualifiers for the Ducks since 1984 

Northwestern Student-Athlete

  • Carpenter walked onto the Northwestern University fencing team as a sophomore 
  • Earned Most Improved Fencer recognition in 1984 
  • Named the team’s Most Valuable Fencer and was a team captain his senior season 
  • He compiled a winning percentage over .700% under the tutelage of Northwestern’s Dr. Laurence D. Schiller 
  • Graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1985

  • Prior to coaching at Stevens, Carpenter was the United States Fencing Association Director for High Performance and the USA Women's Epee National Coach  
  • As coach of the US Women’s National team, Carpenter helped the USA win six medals at the 2008 Olympics 
  • Competed in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga., in individual and team epee 
  • Additionally, he earned a top-8 finish at the 1996 World Cup Tournament and was a three-time World Championship competitor
