Sonya Garcia was hired as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at Stevens Institute of Technology in December of 2006 and will enter her first official season with the Ducks in 2007. Garcia joined Head Coach J.J. O’Connell’s staff following two years of coaching in New Jersey.

Garcia started her collegiate playing career at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. As a two-year member of the varsity team from 2001-03, she received second-team all-region and all-conference honors. Garcia, who earned an Associate of Science degree in Mass Communication, was also an Academic All-American at Fort Scott. She received Cum Laude and Phi Theta Kappa honors upon graduation.

Following her time at Fort Scott, Garcia attended the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut from 2003-05. She played volleyball with Bridgeport’s Division II program for two years. Garcia graduated with Cum Laude and Lambda Pi Eta honors.  She also earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications.

After graduating from Bridgeport, Garcia began her coaching career with the Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club in Westfield, N.J. She served as the team’s head coach starting in November of 2005. Garcia also assumed the role of assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at New Providence High School in August of 2006.

Garcia is currently pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Corporate and Public Communication from Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J.
