Originally hired at Stevens Institute of Technology in 1996 as the part-time Outdoor Recreation Coordinator, John Maurizi was promoted to the position of Assistant Director of Campus Recreation in 1999 before being elevated to Director of Campus Recreation in July of 2000. He has served in that capacity since that time. The 2020-21 academic year is his 25th year at the Institute.

An expert in all facets of intramural sports and recreation, Maurizi is responsible for the development, implementation, budgeting, and management of the Stevens Intramural Program, Campus Recreation, and Outdoor Recreation.

Born in Teaneck, N.J., Maurizi has enjoyed a diverse career encompassing a variety of different work experiences. In 1992, after a brief career in law enforcement, he opened Mountain Quest Inc., an outdoor education service responsible for teaching clients the adventure skills of leadership and decision-making in activities such as rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, and canyoneering.

Experienced in a number of different activities, Maurizi is a certified instructor in the disciplines of Yang Tai Chi Chaun and Northern Shoa Lin. His rock-climbing expertise has led him to several television appearances and a role as the technical advisor in the feature film Murder on Blood Ridge.

An active member in a number of professional organizations, he holds membership in the American Alpine Club, the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association, the American Canoe Association, the American Hiking Association, and the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education.

Maurizi resides in Lafayette, N.J. He has a daughter named Lauren.
