Jon Hochberg made an immediate impact on the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team and led the Ducks to one of the most successful years in program history during his first season at the helm in 2005-06. Under Hochberg’s tutelage, the team tied the school record for wins in a season with an impressive 20-9 record. Stevens also set a new school mark for consecutive wins with 11 straight victories en route to earning a No. 5 ranking in the NCAA Atlantic Region.
Hochberg, who was hired as the Ducks’ head coach on October 11, 2005, did a masterful job with the team without the luxury of having an opportunity to recruit any players prior to the start of last season. Hochberg’s hard work paid off as the Ducks finished in second place in the Skyline Conference during the regular season with a league mark of 10-2. Along the way, Stevens halted six-time defending Skyline champion Mount Saint Mary College’s 64-game regular-season conference win streak with a 59-56 upset of the Blue Knights on February 11 in Newburgh, N.Y.
In the postseason, Hochberg guided the Ducks to the semifinals of both the Skyline Conference and ECAC Metro tournaments. He also helped Stevens earn its first-ever win in the ECAC Championship with a 63-26 victory over John Jay College in the quarterfinals on March 1.
Prior to coming to Stevens, Hochberg served as an assistant coach with the Pace University women’s basketball program for five years. In addition to his coaching responsibilities at Pace, he served as the team’s recruiting coordinator. Hochberg also scouted opponents and assisted in planning and implementing practice sessions. He was involved with a variety of administrative responsibilities at Pace and placed a strong emphasis on player development both on and off the court. His efforts resulted in Pace’s No. 17 national ranking in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II Academic Top-25.
During Hochberg’s tenure at Pace, the Setters enjoyed great success as they reached the 2001 Division II Elite Eight. The Setters earned a berth in the Northeast regional three times in Hochberg’s five seasons there and won the regional title in 2001. Several individuals earned postseason honors under Hochberg’s tutelage, including a Kodak All-American during the 2001-02 season.
Prior to joining the staff at Pace, Hochberg spent one season as an assistant coach at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, N.Y. During his stint at Mohawk Valley in 1999-2000, the team finished 29-3 overall and won the Mountain Valley Conference with a perfect 14-0 league mark. The Hawks advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Elite Eight and finished the year ranked second nationally. Mohawk Valley tied the school record for wins in a season and broke the school mark for consecutive victories. The Hawks also took home the honor as the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year during the season. MVCC had several individuals earn postseason laurels, including a first-team All-American.
Hochberg began his collegiate playing career at Ulster County Community College in Stone Ridge, N.Y. where he served as captain for the 1994-95 season. After graduating from UCCC, Hochberg played his final two years at SUNY Institute of Technology, where he captained the team from 1995-97.
He earned his Associate Science degree in Individual Studies from Ulster in 1995 before receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business/Public Administration from SUNYIT in 1997.
Hochberg has a wealth of experience as an instructor in several basketball camps nationwide, including the Gary Williams Basketball Camp at the University of Maryland and the Philadelphia 76ers Basketball Camp. He has also served as the assistant director at both the Pace and Mohawk Valley summer camps.
