Women's Fencing Earns Victories over Fairleigh Dickinson, Army and James Madison

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team opened its second semester in impressive fashion, earning victories over Division I foes Army, Fairleigh Dickinson and James Madison on Sunday at the United States Military Academy.

The 14-13 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson was the first ever for head coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch’s squad against the Knights. The Ducks also had a close meet with Army (15-12) before cruising to victory against James Madison (23-4).

Sophomore Andrea Chimel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) was one of the Ducks’ top performers on the afternoon, going 8-1 in the epee.

Stevens had a strong showing in the foil with juniors Rensie Punsal (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) and Jen Hsiao (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) both winning eight of their nine matches on the afternoon. Juniors Teresa Bustamante (Dover, N.J./Dover) and Poonam Patel (Absecon, N.J./Absegami) were both 4-4 in the sabre.

The Ducks are next in action on Sunday, January 29, in Sweet Briar, Va., with meets against Sweet Briar, Virginia Tech and Mary Baldwin.
