Haverford, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team competed at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships on Saturday.
The Ducks faced Division I and Division III programs, including competitors from the University of North Carolina, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and NJIT.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens, which had 10 fencers competing on the day, had four competing in the epee group.
Grace Hicks, who was in Pool 2, went 3-3 in the opening round, knocking off Nina Hamilton of Haverford, Hilla Wetherhill of Lafayette, and Emily Varhaul of Drew.
Sofia Stoeckel also went 3-3 in Pool 5, topping Mickey Zhang of Johns Hopkins, Anna Temiryaev of North Carolina, and Payton Wagner of Haverford. The duo advanced to the second round, where they each registered a win but failed to move on.
At sabre,
Sasha Craine collected three victories but missed out on advancing to the second round by one touch. Craine tallied wins over Ava Insinga of Drew, Cathleen Shi of Penn, and Grace Leverton of Haverford.
Julia DiPaolo narrowly missed advancing to the second pool of foil, getting edged out by two touches. DiPaolo was victorious over Genesis Pena of FDU, Zoe Lenz of Lafayette, and Sophie Stamicar of Haverford.
Akemi Rodriguez recorded two victories at foil, as
Emily Zgombic added one.
Ashlyn Leung tallied a win at sabre, knocking off Amelia Baker of Penn State University.
Madyson Gavilanes capped off the wins on the day at epee, taking down Sherleen Yunes of FDU.
