HOBOKEN, N.J. – Stevens Institute of Technology and Western Connecticut University played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Wednesday night in a women’s soccer match at DeBaun Field. It was the fifth consecutive shutout for Stevens which moves to 10-6-1 with its first tie.
Western Connecticut had two dangerous opportunities after halftime. A header by freshman Calie Carter hit the right post in the 69th minute. The best scoring opportunity in overtime was a left-footed drive by sophomore Nicole Corbin from 15 yards that hit the right post in the 97th minute.
Western Connecticut was able to contain Stevens junior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) who had her nine-game scoring streak halted. She had five shots, but was unable to connect in a game with few offensive opportunities for either side.
The shots were even at 11-11 and the corner kick were even at four apiece. Senior Kristen Bartholomew stopped five shots for Western Connecticut. Freshman Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) had two saves in earning the shutout for Stevens.
The Ducks also honored their three seniors - Betty Assefa (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), Rommy Guevara (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Elaine Magallon (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Dominic Academy) - prior to their final regular-season home game.
Stevens closes out its regular season on Saturday, November 1, with a 1 p.m. Skyline Conference game at Centenary College. The Ducks will host a semifinal game in the Skyline Conference Tournament on Wednesday, November 5, at 4 p.m.
