MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) and sophomores Chris Barsky (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) and Brian Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) scored consecutive goals as Stevens rallied from an early deficit to record a 3-1 win over Muhlenberg College on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Drew University’s Doc Young Field.
Stevens (19-1-2) advances to the third round where it will face Drew on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. In rallying to beat Muhlenberg (17-5-1), Stevens avenged its only loss of the season. The Ducks are unbeaten in their last 19 games following a 1-0 loss to the Mules on September 6. Stevens has won 18 straight.
Muhlenberg scored just 8:29 into the game when sophomore James Henshaw connected on a shot to the left side of the net from 12 yards with sophomore Ryan Smallwood and senior Evan Smallwood getting credit for the assists.
Stevens, which earned its first NCAA Tournament victory, pulled even just before halftime. Junior Josh Ottinger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) gathered in a pass in the left side of the penalty area and fed a short pass to McGreevy who was cutting toward the goal. McGreevy beat Muhlenberg goalkeeper Chris Davis with a shot to the lower right corner from 10 yards at 41:59.
The Ducks carried their momentum into the second half. Senior John Quintanilla (Phoenix, Ariz./University) dribbled into the right corner and sent a cross back toward the top of the Muhlenberg penalty area. Barsky settled the pass and scored on a shot to the left side from 15 yards at 49:59. Stevens added an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Quintanilla crossed another ball from the right wing and Marks gathered in the pass and beat Davis to the lower right corner at 67:31
Stevens held a 7-5 advantage in shots in a game with few scoring opportunities. The Ducks limited Muhlenberg to just one shot in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Sean Stevenson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) stopped two shots for the Ducks.
Stevens will provide a fan bus to Sunday's regional final at Drew. The bus will depart from Tech Hall at noon.
