FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Fourth-seeded Farmingdale State recorded a 3-0 (30-19, 30-20, 30-26) win over fifth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday night on the quarterfinals of the Skyline Conference women’s volleyball tournament at Nold Hall.
Farmingdale (20-12) advances to the semifinals where it will face the top-seeded United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday in Kings Point, N.Y. Stevens wraps up its season at 21-14.
Stevens fell to Farmingdale for the third time this season. The Ducks were beaten by the Rams on Saturday in five games in the semifinals of the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament.
Stevens was led by junior outside hitter Margeritte Abdelkodoos (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) who had a team-high seven kills along with two service aces. Abdelkodoos finished the season with 234 kills, the second-highest single-season total in Stevens history. Only Naomi Chin, who had 250 kills last season, had more kills than Abdelkodoos this year. Freshman Micki Biltz (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) contributed six kills, six digs and two total blocks.
Sophomore setter Gina Joyce (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake) had 19 assists and a team-leading 10 digs. Joyce finished the season with a school record 811 assists. She easily surpassed the mark of 695 set by Luisa Renteria in 1989.
Seniors Vanessa Williams (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) and Dominique Gonzalez (Verona, N.J./Verona) had three kills each in their final match. Williams also had a team-leading five total blocks.
