HOBOKEN, N.J. – Sophomore midfielder Valerie Barhnart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) scored five goals and added an assist to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 10-8 win over Haverford College on Saturday in a non-conference women’s lacrosse game at DeBaun Field. The game was the season-opener for both teams.
Stevens never trailed in the game. The Ducks led 3-2 at halftime, but Haverford tied the game just 29 seconds into the second half on an unassisted goal by junior Mindy Walman.
Eight minutes later Barnhart scored consecutive goals within a span of 33 seconds to spark Stevens. The Ducks then received goals from sophomore midfielder Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and senior Jess Soltysik (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) to open up a 7-3 lead.
After Haverford freshman Margaret Sampson scored one of her four goals on a free-position shot to cut the lead to 7-4 at the 47:17 mark, Stevens countered with three goals – two by Barnhart – to build a comfortable six-goal lead. Barnhart’s fifth goal of the game, off an assist from Mirra, gave the Ducks a 10-4 lead at the 56:06 mark.
Haverford used a late rally, scoring four goals in a span of 1:39 to cut the Stevens lead to two. The Fords had five straight draw controls after Barnhart’s goal. Senior Leigh James scored with just 2:03 left to cut the lead to 10-8.
Stevens held a 28-22 advantage in shots. Senior Katherine Duffy had nine saves for Haverford. Senior Kristine Conley (Ossing, N.Y./Our Lady of Victory) stopped four shots for Stevens.
The Ducks return to action on Wednesday, March 5, with a 4 p.m. game at Alvernia College.
