HOBOKEN, N.J. – Sophomore attack Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) scored with eight seconds left in the first overtime period to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 7-6 win over No. 14 Rowan University on Tuesday night at DeBaun Field.
Stevens improves to 6-1 with its first win over a nationally ranked opponent in the three-year history of the program. The game was the season opener for Rowan, ranked 14th in the latest IWLCA Division III poll. The Profs’ first three games were postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
Rowan trailed 5-2 at halftime, but twice battled back to tie in the second half and force the two three-minute non-sudden death overtime periods. Junior Morgan Lang (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) scored off an assist from sophomore Laura McCabe (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) with just 2:16 left in regulation to tie the game at 6-6.
Stevens scored five straight goals in the first half after falling behind 2-0 in the first 12 minutes. Barnhart scored twice in the first half, including a goal 10 seconds before intermission. Sophomore midfielder Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), junior Juliet Pullis (Boonton, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and senior Jess Soltysik (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) added first-half goals for the Ducks.
Rowan scored the first three goals of the second half to tie the game at 5-5. Junior Tiffany Martinez (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), senior Tracy Rogalcheck (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and junior Monica Chin (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored goals in an eight-minute span. Mirra answered with a free-position goal at the 43:01 mark as Stevens regained the lead, 6-5.
Rowan held a 20-15 advantage in shots. Stevens senior goalkeeper Kristine Conley (Ossining, N.Y./Our Lady of Victory) stopped a season-high 12 shots, including a free-position shot by Rogalcheck with just 12 seconds left in the second overtime period. Junior Tricia Marino (Galloway Township, N.J./Lawrenceville) had six stops for Rowan.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday, March 22, with a 3 p.m. game at the University of Scranton.
