Michelle Tan and the Stevens defense limited Montclair State to two second-half goals.

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Sophomore attack Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) scored six goals as Stevens Institute of Technology won its sixth straight contest with an 11-7 victory over Montclair State on Wednesday night in a Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference game at Sprague Field.

Sophomore Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) added three goals and two assists for the Ducks (12-2, 3-0 KLC), who clinched the top seed in the upcoming Knickerbocker tournament.  Junior Jess Hann had two goals and an assist for the Red Hawks (6-7, 2-2 KLC), who have dropped two straight.

Tied at 5-5 at halftime, Stevens scored the first three goals of the half to pull ahead, 8-5. Barnhart tallied her fifth goal of the game in the 34th minute as she scored off an assist from Quinn.  The Ducks extended the lead to two as Quinn scored on a free position shot and Juliet Pullis (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) made it a three-goal lead as she took a feed from Quinn and scored in the 38th minute.

Montclair cut the lead to 8-7 with 16:10 remaining on consecutive goals by Jodi Gangemi and Angela Giampino.

However, Stevens ended any hope of an MSU comeback as Quinn scored twice in a 24-second span. The first came on a free position shot at 45:24 to play and the second came as she took a pass from Lindy Gibbons (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) and beat Red Hawk goaltender Lisa Smicklo to the lower right side.  Barnhart, who has 18 goals in her last three games, capped the Ducks’ scoring with a goal in the 55th minute.

Bridget Fitzsimmons had two goals for Montclair State, which was outshot in the game, 29-14. Smicklo made 15 saves while Stevens senior goaltender Kristine Conley (Ossining, NY/Our Lady of Victory) made two.  The Ducks also received an outstanding defensive performance from junior Michelle Tan (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia).  Tan limited Gangemi, the nation’s third-leading scorer, to just two goals.

Stevens returns to action on Saturday, April 26, when it closes out the regular season with a 1 p.m. game at Centenary.  The Ducks will also host a semifinal game in the Knickerbocker Tournament on Wednesday, April 30.
