HOBOKEN, N.J. – Stevens Institute of Technology and New York University kicked off the men’s soccer season with a scoreless tie in double overtime on Saturday night at DeBaun Field. The game was the season opener for both teams.
Stevens held a 22-11 advantage in shots and a 12-7 edge in corner kicks. New York University senior goalkeeper Michael Bonacuso stopped 10 shots for the Violets while senior Sean Stevenson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) made four saves for the Ducks.
Stevens had the best scoring chance in overtime. Sophomore Steve Liebezeit (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) lofted a header on net from 10 yards, but an outstretched Bonacuso tapped the ball over the crossbar to preserve the tie in the 104th minute.
Early in the second half, Stevens sophomore Brian Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) fed a pass through the middle, setting up an opportunity for junior Adam Kalbermatten (Allentown, Pa./Central Catholic), but Kalbermatten’s drive from 12 yards sailed just high.
Stevens returns to action on Friday, September 5, when it faces Delaware Valley College at noon in the opening round of the Muhlenberg Kwik Goal Tournament.
