Women's Volleyball clinches top seed in Skyline Tournament with 3-0 win over Kings Point

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Freshman outside hitter Dawn Herring (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) had 15 kills to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-25) win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday at the Canavan Arena.

With the win, Stevens (18-2, 7-0 Skyline) clinched the top seed in the six-team Skyline Conference Tournament.  The Ducks will host the semifinals and championship on Saturday, November 6.  Kings Point falls to 12-10 overall and 6-2 in Skyline play.

Stevens used several big scoring runs in defeating Kings Point.  The opening game was tied at 10-10 before the Ducks strung together seven straight points to take control.  Stevens scored the first four points of the second game and opened the third game with nine straight points behind the serving of senior outside hitter Margeritte Abdelkodoos (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington).  Abdelkodoos, who had 10 kills, recorded four of the team's eight service aces.

Herring, who leads the Skyline Conference in hitting percentage, had another efficient night with 15 kills and just two errors in 24 attempts (.542).  Junior setter Gina Joyce (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake) contributed seven kills with no errors in 10 attempts.  Stevens hit .342 as a team with 47 kills and 11 errors in 105 attempts.  Joyce also had 31 assists.

Sophomore libero Jin Bai (Edison, N.J./Edison) had a team-leading eight digs while junior middle hitter Rachel Ostroff (North Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day) had three block solos.

The Ducks are back in action on Saturday as they host the Skyline/CUNY Challenge - a six-team crossover - beginning at 10 a.m.
