HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshman forward Mike Kaiser (Roy, Utah/Roy) came off the bench to score three goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team earned a 3-0 win over Bridgewater State College on Saturday night at DeBaun Field in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
Stevens (21-1-1), ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll, advances to the third round where it will face Richard Stockton College at a site to be determined. The Ducks earned a 2-1 overtime win over the Ospreys on Oct. 9. Bridgewater State ends its season at 12-7-2.
Kaiser, who came off the bench in the 31st minute, gave Stevens the lead just before halftime when he headed in a cross from freshman midfielder Craig Moquin (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) at 44:22.
Junior forward Brian Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) created the second Stevens scoring opportunity when he took a pass from the back, dribble in toward the Bridgewater box and chipped the ball over charging goalkeeper John Naughton. Kaiser ran onto the ball and knocked the ball off his chest into the goal at the 57:23 mark.
Kaiser completed his first career hat trick when he took a pass on the left flank, dribbled into the box and fired a shot from 15 yards past Naughton at 69:10.
Stevens controlled play, out-shooting Bridgewater State 21-5, including 13-0 in the first half. The Ducks also had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J./Newton) needed to make just one save to earn his sixth shutout in seven games. Naughton stopped seven shots for Bridgewater State.
