MAHWAH, N.J. – Natalie Zacharias tallied 20 points to lead Ramapo College past the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team 57-50 in a non-conference game on Monday night.
With the loss, Stevens falls to 3-1 on the season, while Ramapo improves to 4-0.
Trailing by three points at halftime, Stevens took a 43-42 lead on a layup by junior forward Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) with 6:07 left. However, Ramapo reclaimed the lead after scoring the next five points and never trailed the rest of the way.
Leading 47-45 with just under four minutes remaining, Ramapo used an 8-2 run in a span of 3:25 to push its lead to eight points. With 17 seconds remaining, Stevens freshman guard Jean Matusiak (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) hit a three-point shot to cut Ramapo’s lead to five. The Roadrunners scored the next two points to push their lead back up to seven. Ramapo led by as many as 10 points in the second half.
Junior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa Academy) and freshman forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) turned in a strong effort for Stevens with 12 points apiece along with five and nine rebounds respectively.
Ramapo had two other players in double digits with Vanessa Vargas recording 12 points and Alison Beller totaling 10 points with eight rebounds.
Stevens is back in action Wednesday, December 1 at Rutgers-Newark. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
