HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior guard Sarah Marquez scored 21 points and junior forward Jennifer Weldon added 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Drew University to an 80-69 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday night in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.
Senior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) scored on a driving layup with 8:06 left in the first half that gave Stevens a 26-22 lead. Drew (10-8) then scored the final 16 points of the first half and opened the second half by scoring the first six points. Marquez had eight points during the first-half stretch while Weldon scored four of the six points in the second half as the Rangers opened up a 44-26 lead with 17:08 remaining.
Stevens (12-10), which had its four-game winning streak snapped, got as close as nine points, 66-57, following a steal and a layup by junior guard Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) with 3:50 remaining.
Cruz led all scorers with 25 points while adding seven rebounds and seven assists. Bialko and sophomore forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa Academy) added 16 points apiece for Stevens.
Freshman guard Melissa Kraft added 13 points off the bench for Drew. Freshman guard Courtney Cunningham had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, February 11, when it hosts Manhattanville College in a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
