HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior attack Juliet Pullis (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored five goals, including two in the final 16 minutes to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 9-8 win over Messiah College on Tuesday night at DeBaun Field.
Stevens erased an early three-goal deficit to improve to 8-1. Messiah falls to 3-3.
With the score tied 6-6 midway through the second half, Stevens scored three straight goals to take control. Junior attack Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) scored her second goal of the game with 17:29 left to put the Ducks in front. Pullis scored the next two goals, the first off an assist from senior Lindy Gibbons (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) with 15:28 remaining. She then scored the eventual game-winning goal off an assist from junior Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) with 9:46 remaining.
Messiah received consecutive goals from senior attack Joanna Wilkinson with 8:11 and 4:17 remaining to pull within one. Messiah regained possession with just under two minutes remaining. The Falcons had a pair of free position opportunities but were unable to convert.
Messiah scored three goals in the first ten minutes from junior midfielder Kayte Hall to take an early 3-0 lead. Stevens countered with a goal by Quinn and two goals by Pullis to tie the game at 3-3. Wilkinson’s goal with 7:48 left in the half gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead at the break.
For the game, Stevens held a 39-22 advantage in shots. Sophomore Melissa Scott (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) made nine saves for the Ducks. Freshman Janelle Groff stopped 17 shots for Messiah.
Stevens returns to action on Monday, March 29, when it travels to Eastern Connecticut State for a 3:30 p.m. game.
