Junior Becca Quinn had two goals and one assist in Stevens' 9-4 win over Scranton

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior attack Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) had four goals and two assists to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team to a 9-4 win over the University of Scranton on Friday afternoon at DeBaun Field.

With the win, the Ducks avenged their worst loss of the 2003 campaign.  Stevens dropped an 18-11 decision to Scranton last March 22 in Scranton, Pa.

Scranton (0-1) took a 2-1 lead 7:52 into the game on a goal by sophomore attack Kelly Herlihy.  Stevens (2-0) scored the final three goals of the first half and added a goal early in the second half to open up a 5-2 lead.  Senior attack Lindy Gibbons (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) tied the game for Stevens at the 12:39 mark off an assist from Barnhart.  Barnhart put the Ducks ahead four minutes later on a free-position shot.

Barnhart gave Stevens a 5-2 lead early in the second half on a free-position goal at the 33:59.  Scranton twice pulled to within two goals as Herlihy and junior Lauren Johnson scored second-half goals for the Royals.  Johnson’s free-position shot at 45:54 cut the Stevens lead to 6-4.

Barnhart then scored two goals in a span of less than two minutes.  Her unassisted goal at 51:51 gave Stevens an 8-4 lead.  Junior attack Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus), who had two goals and one assist, closed out the scoring for Stevens with a free-position goal at 59:11.

Stevens held a 23-22 edge in shots.  Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Scott (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) made 13 saves for the Ducks.  Sophomore Courtney Enman stopped nine shots for Scranton.

Stevens is back in action on Sunday, March 7, when it hosts Roanoke College in a 6 p.m. game at DeBaun Field.
