UNION, N.J. - Freshman Caitlin Slemmer scored just 56 seconds into the game as Kean earned a 3-0 win over Stevens on Wednesday night in a field hockey game at Kean Alumni Stadium.
With the win the Cougars improved to 3-2, while the Ducks dropped to 0-4.
Kean increased its lead to 2-0, when Jessica Kwiatkowski sent a pass inside the circle to Melissa Nunez who smacked a hard shot into the back of the cage at the 7:52 mark. Kean extended their lead to 3-0 when Tina Broomfield tipped in a pass from Slemmer in the second half.
Stevens' best scoring opportunity came midway through the second half when Melissa Scott (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) was awarded a penalty stroke. However, her low shot was blocked by Cougar goalie Concetta Valerio.
For the Ducks, Katherine Freed (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) had a strong game in goal making 11 saves, while Valerio stopped two shots.
The Ducks return to action Saturday, September 25 when they host Richard Stockton at 1:00 p.m.
