HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior midfielder Brian Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) scored one goal and assisted on another to lead seventh-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology to a 3-0 win over 15th-ranked The College of New Jersey on Wednesday in a non-conference men’s soccer game at DeBaun Field.
Stevens, ranked seventh in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll, improved to 4-0-1. The College of New Jersey suffered its first loss, dropping to 5-1.
Stevens jumped ahead early as Marks took a pass over the middle and pushed the ball past charging TCNJ goalkeeper Shawn Mecchi toward the end line. He regained possession to the right of the goal and sent a pass along the goal line and sophomore midfielder Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) tap the ball in to put the Ducks ahead at 5:50.
Leading 1-0 at halftime, Stevens extended its lead early in the second half. Freshman Mike Kaiser (Roy, Utah/Roy), who entered at the start of the second half, headed in a cross from fellow freshman Sean Bliss (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) at the 47:03 mark.
Bliss then fed Marks for a breakaway goal at 61:22. It was the first goal of the season for Marks, the Ducks’ returning All-American who missed the previous two games due to an injury.
Stevens held a 10-9 advantage in shots, but put nine of its shots on net, compared to just three for The College of New Jersey. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J./Newton) stopped three shots to earn his second shutout of the season for Stevens. Shawn Mecchi made six saves for The College of New Jersey.
