BETHLEHEM, PA – Freshman Hillary Paul (Concord, NH) scored a pair of goals and senior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) added a third as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team posted a 3-1 victory at Moravian College Wednesday afternoon under a light rain at Betty Prince Field in Bethlehem, PA. The victory improves the Ducks to 7-5, while Moravian falls to 5-9 with the loss.
Paul put Stevens on the board in the sixth minute with her second goal of the season. Fellow freshman Jessica Megill (Clark, NJ) fed Paul on the play for Megill’s first assist of the season.
Moravian evened it up a little more than two minutes later on Mauri Dallago’s goal from Stacee Cupples in the eighth minute.
Paul’s second score of the match put the Ducks ahead for good in the 28th minute. Barnhart added an insurance goal in the 55th minute for her ninth tally of the season.
Stevens outshot Moravian, 20-9, in the match, with the Ducks’ defense surrendering just three shots in the second half. Barnhart, Paul and sophomore Beth Rychcik (Pleasant Valley, CA) led the Ducks’ offensive attack with four shots apiece. Stevens held a 15-4 advantage on penalty corners.
Freshman Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, DE) made three saves in goal for Stevens, while her counterpart, Amanda Gaun of Moravian, had 12 stops.
Moravian marked the sixth opponent this season that Stevens, which is in its second year of existence as a varsity sport, has avenged a loss they suffered last season. The Ducks suffered a 4-0 defeat at home to Moravian last year.
Stevens is now idle until Friday, Oct. 21, when it hosts Hood at 4 p.m. at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, NJ.
