MADISON, NJ – Senior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) scored a pair of goals to lift the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at FDU-Florham Saturday afternoon in Madison, NJ. The win – the Ducks’ third straight – improves them to 9-5 for the season. The Devils fall to 3-12 overall.
Barnhart gave Stevens an early 1-0 lead with a goal early in the first half. Sophomore Beth Rychcik (Pleasant Valley, NY) found Barnhart for the score.
FDU-Florham tied it up with a goal just before halftime. The Devils scored off a deflection on a penalty corner to even the match at 1-1.
Barnhart scored her fourth game-winning goal this season, connecting for the Ducks in the second half for the unassisted score. She leads the team with 11 goals this season.
The Ducks’ defense made the score hold up, headlined by freshman Casey Scherck (Virginia Beach, VA), who made a pair of huge defensive saves to help preserve the victory for Stevens.
Play was even throughout the match with both teams producing many scoring opportunities.
The Ducks will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Wilson in Chambersburg, PA, at 4 p.m.
