Field Hockey Falls to No. 19 Kean, 2-1

HOBOKEN, NJ – No. 19 Kean University escaped with a 2-1 victory over The Stevens Institute of Technology in field hockey action Saturday afternoon at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, NJ. With the loss the Ducks drop to 6-5 overall, while the Cougars improve to 9-4 with the victory.

Kean jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Caitlin Slemmer scored an unassisted goal 49 seconds into the game.

The Cougars increased their lead to 2-0 when Cherie McNellis found Stephanie Cirino in front of the net at the 34:44 mark.   

Stevens netted its only goal of the game with one second remaining on the clock when freshman Hillary Paul (Concord, NH) sent a shot into the right corner of the net, to tally her first collegiate score of the season.

Kean outshot Stevens, 10-6, and held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners in the game.  

Freshman Alli Shields (Mahopac, NY) had three shots for Stevens, while Paul registered two.

Freshman Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, DE) made five saves for the Ducks, while Concetta Valerio had one stop for the Cougars.

Saturday’s game marked the third one-goal loss for the Ducks this season.  Last season, the Ducks dropped a 3-0 decision at Kean. 

Stevens returns to action when it travels to Bethlehem, PA to face Moravian at 4 p.m.
