HOBOKEN, NJ (November 12, 2005) – Freshman Meghan Tennyson (Folsom, LA) registered a hat trick, leading the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team past Wilkes University in the first round of the Division III NCAA Championship, 5-0 on Saturday night at DeBaun Field. With the win, the Ducks advance to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the fourth straight year and improve to 19-2 overall.
The Ducks will face the winner of the 7:30 match-up between Johns Hopkins and Rowan. The second round game will be played on Sunday at 6 p.m. in Hoboken, NJ.
Senior Lorrie Brabender (Newark, DE) scored on a pass from junior Megan Legendre (O’Fallon, IL) in the 18th minute to give the Ducks a 1-0 advantage. Legendre passed the ball from the middle to Brabender who was set up on the left side of the field and poked the ball around Wilkes goalie Jessica Berkey.
Tennyson extended Stevens lead to 2-0 when she rocketed a shot from 20 yards out over Berkey’s head at the 37:23 mark.
The Ducks increased their lead to 3-0 in the first 1:26 of the second half when Brabender sent a corner kick to freshman Salme Cook (Fairfax, VA) who was set up in front of the net.
Tennyson scored two straight goals within 1:06 to put the Ducks on top 5-0. The first goal brought the goalkeeper out of the net and tipped off her hands and into the goal. Sophomore Cristina Fulgencio (Staten Island, NY) lined up Tennyson on the second goal.
The Ducks controlled possession in the game, dominating in shots 21-8.
Junior Erica Midttveit (Jackson, NJ) made three saves for Stevens in the game, while Berkey registered 7 for Wilkes.
