Women’s Volleyball Cruises Past Kings Point in Skyline Conference Championship

HOBOKEN, NJ (NOVEMBER 5, 2005) Senior Gina Joyce (Fort Myers, FL) led the Ducks with 39 assists, 13 digs and two kills and was named the Skyline Conference Tournament MVP, leading the Stevens Institute of Technology to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 30-17) victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the Skyline Conference Volleyball Championship on Saturday at the Canavan Arena.

Stevens, 30-5 on the season, broke the school record for wins in a season and captured its second consecutive conference volleyball title.  With the win, the Ducks earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship. 

Stevens, the top seed in the tournament, cruised to a 30-17, 30-16, 30-14 win over Old Westbury in the semifinals.  Third-seeded Kings Point defeated second-seeded St. Joseph’s in five games (19-30, 30-18, 30-28, 22-30, 17-15) to advance to the championship match.

In the championship match freshman Melanie Volk (Thompson Station, TN) dominated for the Ducks, registering 14 kills and only two errors in 26 attacks.  Volk also totaled seven digs.  Sophomore Dawn Herring (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added eight kills and six digs. Freshman Summer Hamilton (San Diego, CA) contributed 10 kills and three digs, while fellow freshman Melisssa Rhode (New Orleans, LA) tallied six kills, eight digs and three aces.

Junior Rachel Ostroff (North Miami, FL) tallied 16 digs in the semifinal win over Old Westbury.  Volk totaled a team-high 16 kills, while Hamilton added 11. Joyce registered 29 assists, four kills and five digs to go along with three aces.  Herring added seven kills, seven digs and three assists.
