MONTCLAIR, N.J.- Senior midfielder Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) tallied six goals and an assist to lead the Stevens women’s lacrosse team to a 14-13 win over Montclair State University in a Knickerbocker women’s lacrosse game on Wednesday evening at Sprague Field. After picking up its fourth straight win, Stevens improves to 10-2 and 3-0 in the conference while Montclair falls to 7-3 and 1-1 in the conference.
The teams traded goals over the first 30 minutes with neither school able to lead by more than two goals as Montclair State took an 8-7 halftime lead. Stevens then tied the game on the first of two goals on the night by junior attack Melissa Scott (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional), before Montclair reeled off three goals in a span of 2:15 to take an 11-8 advantage.. The Ducks then scored five consecutive goals to take the lead for good, including three unassisted tallies by Barnhart in a span of 2:45, for a 13-11 advantage.
Nicole LaRocca brought MSU within 13-12 with her third goal of the game with 2:58 remaining, before Scott put home the eventual game-winner at 58:27 to offset Brianna Gillin’s goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation.
Freshman goaltender Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) made seven saves for the Ducks, who out-shot the Red Hawks, 32-26.
Stevens is back in action on Saturday, April 16 when it hosts Manhattanville in a conference game at noon.
