MADISON, N.J.- Senior midfielder Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) netted the game-winning goal with just under six minutes remaining in the game to lead the 17th-ranked Stevens women’s lacrosse team past Drew 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Stevens improves to 13-2 and picks up its seventh straight victory, while Drew drops to 8-5.
Senior midfielder Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) led the Stevens scorers with five goals. Mirra tallied two goals and an assist while sophomore midfielder Theresa Dolan (Albertson, N.Y./Mineola) and senior attack Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) each added a goal in the game.
Drew trailed 5-2 entering the second half, but scored two straight goals in a span of 2:30 to pull within one. Dolan netted a goal at 19:06 to give Stevens a two-goal cushion, but junior Kaity Ryan and senior Anne Luetzow connected on back-to-back goals as the Rangers tied the game at 6-6 with 11:29 remaining in the game. The teams traded goals within the last 10 minutes with Stevens pulling ahead on two different occasions.
Stevens opened up an 8-7 lead on a free position shot by Barnhart with 7:59 remaining. Drew tied the game for the third time in the second half when sophomore Rachel Hurvitz scored with 6:39 remaining. Mirra scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 5:53 left and kept Drew out of its zone until the final buzzer to earn its 13th victory of the season.
Freshman goaltender Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) made a season-high 18 saves for the Ducks.
Stevens is back in action on Wedneday, April 27 when it hosts Manhattanville in the semifinal round of the Knickerbocker Conference Tournament at 7 p.m.
