Dolan, Barnhart lead Women’s Lacrosse past Kean 10-8 in Knickerbocker opener

Sophomore Theresa Dolan tallied two goals and an assist in the Ducks' win over Kean.

HOBOKEN, N.J.- Senior attack Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) and sophomore midfielder Theresa Dolan (Albertson, N.Y./Mineola) tallied two goals and an assist apiece to lead 14th-ranked Stevens women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 win over Kean University in its Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference opener on Thursday night at DeBaun Field.

Stevens improves to 7-2, 1-0 in the Knickerbocker lacrosse conference while Kean falls to 6-3, 1-1 in the conference.

Junior attack Mary Schurgot (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) also netted two goals in the game, while freshman midfielder Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls), senior midfielder Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), senior attack Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and junior defenseman Melissa Scott (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional)added one goal each in the win for the Ducks.

With the Ducks leading 8-7 with less than nine minutes to play in the second half, Mirra and Schurgot netted goals within one minute of each other to give Stevens a 10-7advantage.  Kean got as close as two, 10-8, with 42 seconds remaining, but Stevens held on to the win, earning its first Knickerbocker conference win of the season.

The Cougars scored the first two goals of the game at the 14:30 and 7:56 mark, but the Ducks answered back with three goals within a span of six minutes.  Kean tied the score at 3-3 with 10 seconds remaining, but Schurgot tallied the go-ahead goal with one second remaining on the clock to give Stevens a 4-3 edge headed into the break.

Barnhart opened up the second half with her second goal of the game to give the Ducks a two-goal cushion.  Senior midfielder Melissa Nunez netted her first goal of the game for the Cougars at the 21:11 mark to cut the Ducks lead to one.  Stevens scored the next three goals within the next four minutes to take its biggest lead of the game, 8-4.

Freshman attack Tara Nardella led the Cougars with three goals, while Nunez and junior attack Tina Broomfield netted two goals apiece.

Freshman Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) made 5 saves for the Ducks. 

Stevens is back in action on Saturday, April 9 when it hosts Mount Saint Vincent at 10:30 a.m. at DeBaun Field.
