No. 7 Stevens, No. 17 Arcadia Play To Scoreless Tie In Men’s Soccer Season Opener

HOBOKEN, NJ – The seventh-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team opened the season with a scoreless tie in double-overtime against No. 17 Arcadia Thursday evening at DeBaun Field.

Stevens had several close scoring opportunities, including three near-goals from senior Steve Liebezeit (Pompton Lakes, NJ). With 33 minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Mike Kaiser (Roy, UT) fed Liebezeit, who sent a shot from 15 yards out that was stopped. Later in the contest, Liebezeit fired a hard shot from 25 yards, but Arcadia goalie Ralph Giangiulio punched the ball high of the cross bar for the save. Liebezeit’s final opportunity came with nearly two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, but his shot was again stopped by Giangiulio.

Stevens’ closest chance at scoring came with 30 minutes remaining in regulation when sophomore Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, MI) sent a low shot into the box that bounced off the far post.

Arcadia’s best scoring chance came in the first minute of overtime when Zach Askin got free near the goal, but his low shot was stopped by Stevens goalie Chris Celentano (Newton, NJ).

The Ducks had one final scoring opportunity with less than a minute remaining in the final overtime. Senior Chris Barsky (Holland, PA) fed sophomore Craig Moquin (Breinigsville, PA) in the box but his shot sailed high of the cross bar. 

Celentano recorded two saves for Stevens, while Gianiulio posted six stops for Arcadia. The Ducks outhsot Arcadia, 14-9, with both schools registering three corner kicks. 

Stevens will return to action next Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11, traveling to the New Jersey City University Tournament. The Ducks will face host NJCU on Saturday at noon and Drew on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
