HOBOKEN, NJ – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team used a five-goal second half to cruise to a 6-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Stevens Engineering Cup at DeBaun Field. The Ducks improve to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Red Hawks fall to 0-2-1.

Stevens got on the board in the 24th minute as junior Siena York-Carr (Davis, CA) and senior Coralynn Jones (Stevensville, MT) found junior Heather Dean (Renton, WA) inside the box. Dean collected the ball and lobbed it over the outstretched arms of the goalie for the score from 10 yards out.

Stevens increased its lead in the 50th minute as freshman Kristen Wolf (Matawan, NJ) sent a cross to freshman Salme Cook (Fairfax, VA), who drilled a shot from the top of the box past RPI goalie Jackie Gabriele.

The Ducks built a 3-0 advantage as junior Megan Legendre (O’Fallon, IL) sliced through the defense and rocketed a hard, low shot that landed in the back of the net in the 70th minute.

Freshman Meghan Tennyson (Folsom, LA) struck twice for the Ducks in a two-minute span to open a 5-0 lead on the Red Hawks late. Tennyson’s first score came in the 75th minute when Stevens goalie Erica Mdttveit’s (Jackson, NJ) clear led the midfielder down the field passed the defense. Tennyson drew the keeper out then lobbed a shot over her head that bounced in the open goal. A little less than two minutes later, Tennyson notched her second goal of the game, collecting the ball off a deflection and sending it past the keeper.

With less than three minutes remaining in the contest, Stevens added its sixth and final goal, as Cook and freshman Audra Clark (Dallas, TX) hooked up on a corner kick with Clark on the receiving end of the goal, heading in the shot from close range.

The Ducks outshot RPI, 16-5, holding a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Midttveit made four saves for the Ducks, including a diving save on Sherika Wynter’s hard shot early in the second half. Gabriele registered seven stops for RPI.

In the second game of the Stevens Engineering Cup Saturday afternoon, Rebecca Houston curled a shot inside the far post from 15 yards out in the 81st minute to give the NYU a 1-0 victory over MIT. The Violets outshot the Engineers, 11-9, in the contest.
