HOBOKEN, NJ – Sophomore Cristina Fulgencio (Staten Island, NY) scored in the 68th minute to lift the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team to the Engineering Cup with a 1-0 victory over New York University Sunday afternoon at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, NJ.

The Ducks, who move to 3-1 on the season with the victory, have now won the tournament title both years of its existence. Stevens was the lone team in the four-school tournament, which also included Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University, to finish the weekend undefeated after today’s victory over the Violets and yesterday’s 6-0 win against RPI.

“It is fun to be able to put schools like this together and we are happy keeping the cup here at Stevens,” said Stevens head coach Jeff Parker. “We are still trying to find our away as a team, but a lot of our younger players made some big contributions this weekend.”

Following a flurry of shots that ricocheted off NYU keeper Kaitlin Barnes, Fulgencio collected the ball in front of the goal and punched in the score from close range to record what proved to be the deciding score in the contest.

Stevens controlled possession throughout the contest, outshooting the Violets 17-6. Junior Erica Midttveit (Jackson, NJ) registered two saves for the Ducks, while Barnes made 12 stops for the Violets. Stevens held NYU without a corner kick the entire contest, while registering six corner kicks.

Freshman Meghan Tennyson (Folson, LA) had a team-high five shots for the Ducks, while freshman Salme Cook (Fairfax, VA) added three shots.

Stevens swept MVP honors as Tennyson was named the Stevens Engineering Cup Offensive Most Valuable Player after scoring a pair of goals in the Ducks’ first game of the tournament on Saturday. Cook garnered Defensive Most Valuable Player honors, helping guide Stevens to a pair of shutouts in the two-game tournament.

In the final game of the Stevens Engineering Cup, Sarah Hinz scored off a rebound from 10 yards out in the 80th minute to give RPI a 1-0 victory over MIT. RPI held a 10-3 advantage over MIT in shots, with each team attempting one corner kick. Katherine Vater made six saves for MIT, while Tara Marandino recorded a pair of stops for RPI.

The Ducks travel to William Paterson (3-1) on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match with the Pioneers.
