HOBOKEN, NJ – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team got Homecoming Weekend started off on a high note with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Friday evening at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, NJ. The Ducks win their fourth-straight match to improve to 11-2, while the Warriors fall to 9-5.
Stevens and Eastern Connecticut State split the first two games with the Ducks posting a 30-14 win in the first game and the Warriors earning a 30-27 victory in the second game. Stevens took control in the third game, winning, 30-14, and continued its momentum in the fourth game with a 30-23 victory to seal the match for the Ducks.
Freshmen Melissa Rhode (New Orleans, LA) and Melanie Volk (Thompson Station, TN) each had five service aces for the Ducks. Rhode contributed nine kills and nine digs, while Volk registered nine kills and 13 digs.
Sophomore Dawn Herring (Prince Frederick, MD) had a team-high 19 kills with only seven errors on 39 attempts. She also added nine digs and three blocks.
Freshman Jess Gardner (Penfield, NY) registered 11 kills with only three errors on 18 attempts, while adding a pair of service aces and three blocks.
Junior Micki Biltz (Lakewood, OH) posted 51 assists in the match to go along with five kills, 14 digs and five service aces.
Junior Rachel Ostroff (North Miami, FL) had a team-best 24 digs for the Ducks.
The Ducks return to action next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, traveling to Salisbury, MD, for the Sea Gulf Classic. Stevens opens competition on Friday against Villa Julie at 6 p.m. and face Lebanon Valley at 8 p.m.
