Women's Volleyball Sweeps Competition In Skyline/NJAC Crossover

Sophomore Dawn Herring was one of three Stevens players voted to the All-Tournament Team.

HOBOKEN, NJThe Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team won all three of its matches on Saturday in the Skyline/NJAC Crossover Invitational. However, the New Jersey Athletic Conference secured the conference victory over the Skyline Conference.

The Ducks opened the morning session with a 30-20, 30-15, 30-27 victory over Ramapo College. In its second match of the day, Stevens posted a three-game victory over William Paterson (30-13, 30-17, 36-34). The Ducks earned their final three-game victory of the day against Rutgers-Newark, registering a 30-22 win in the first game, 30-19 in the second game and 30-25 in the third game.

“We had great contributions from a lot of different people, which contributed to our success,” said head coach J.J. O’Connell. “It was a really good opening to our season, but we still have a long way to reach our team’s goals.”

In the first match of the day against Ramapo, Dawn Herring (Prince Frederick,MD) led Stevens with 12 kills, while Jess Gardner (Penfield, NY) added eight kills. Gina Joyce (Fort Myers, FL) recorded all 41 of the Duck’s assists in the match.  

Melissa Rhode (New Orleans, LA) had a team-best 15 kills and 10 digs, while Herring chipped in 10 kills in the victory over William Paterson. Joyce (26) and Micki Biltz (Lakewood, OH) (20) combined for 46 assists in the win.

Led by Melanie Volk’s (Thompson Station, TN) 12 kills and Joyce’s 30 assists, Stevens capped off the day with the victory over Rutgers-Newark. Herring contributed nine kills and 12 digs in the win. Rachel Ostroff (N. Miami Beach, FL) posted a team-high 21 digs for the Ducks.    

Herring, Joyce and Rhode each represented Stevens on the All-Tournament team, joining Lauren Shears (William Paterson), Sheena Eldred (Rutgers-Newark), Janine Wachter (USMMA), Samantha Wejnert (Ramapo) and Kerri Lindenthaler (William Paterson).

The Ducks return to action next Wednesday, Sept. 7, welcoming New Paltz to Canavan Arena for a 7 p.m. match.
