SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (October 20, 2006) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team posted 3-0 victories over Union College and Saint Michael’s College during pool play on Friday at the Skidmore College Classic Volleyball Tournament in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The Ducks started the day with a 30-17, 32-30, 30-21 win over Union and then defeated Saint Michael’s 30-19, 30-18, 30-19.
In the match against Union, sophomore outside hitter Melanie Volk (Thompson Station, Tenn.) had 12 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Summer Hamilton (San Diego, Calif.) tallied nine kills and two blocks. Senior setter Micki Biltz (Lakewood, Ohio) finished with 32 assists. Senior outside hitter/libero Rachel Ostroff (North Miami, Fla.) chipped in with 20 digs.
During the Ducks’ three-game sweep of Saint Michael’s, junior outside hitter Dawn Herring (Prince Frederick, Md.) and Hamilton recorded eight kills apiece. Volk collected seven kills. Sophomore middle blocker Jessica Gardner (Penfield, N.Y.) registered five kills and three blocks. Biltz added a team-high 39 assists. Ostroff collected 21 digs.
Stevens has won six straight matches and 16 of 17 overall to run its record to 23-4 on the year. With their wins on Friday, the Ducks advanced to the championship pool where they will meet Russell Sage College on Saturday at 1 p.m. Stevens will close out the tournament against Skidmore at 3 p.m.
