MADISON, N.J. (October 21, 2006) – After starting the season with just one win in its first five games (1-2-2), the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team suddenly finds itself 11-2-3 overall following a dramatic 3-2 victory over Drew University on Saturday in Madison, N.J.  Sophomore forward Meghan Tennyson (Folsom, La.) netted the game-winner with just 67 seconds remaining in regulation as the Ducks extended their winning streak to six straight contests.
Tied 1-1 at the half, Stevens grabbed a 2-1 lead less than ten minutes into the second period as freshman midfielder Alicia Vandersluis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stole the ball deep in the Rangers’ box and lobbed a tight-angle shot past sophomore goalkeeper Ann Mularz (Linden, N.J.).  The goal was the fourth of the year for Vandersluis.
With exactly ten minutes remaining in regulation, Drew (6-9-1) scored the equalizer as freshman back Chelsea LeDuc (Topsham, Maine) sent a through ball to senior midfielder Cait Mueller (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), who was streaking down the left side.  Mueller calmly waited for senior goalkeeper Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J.) to come out of her net then slipped the ball by her to knot the score at two.
In the closing minutes of the game, Mularz sent a goal kick downfield that junior forward/back Sara Roeder (Portland, Ore.) headed back towards Tennyson, who cut in behind the Rangers’ defense.  As Mularz challenged on the play, Tennyson lofted a shot over the goalie and into the back of the net for her second game-winning goal of the season and the third of her career.  Tennyson’s goal was her sixth this season and the 17th of her career.
Following several good scoring chances by the Rangers early in the game, Stevens jumped on top at 35:44 as junior midfielder Cristina Fulgencio (Staten Island, N.Y.) took advantage of an unsuccessful clearing attempt by Drew following a corner kick from sophomore forward Alison Amos (Plano, Texas).
LeDuc answered right back with an unassisted goal as she headed home a rebound off a save by Midttveit, who was unable to settle a free kick off the foot of senior midfielder Gabbie Haenn (Newtown Square, Pa.).
Stevens controlled most of the offensive action in the game as it out-shot Drew 28-14.  The Ducks also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.  Midttveit finished with seven saves.  Mularz made 12 stops for the Rangers.
On Wednesday, Stevens will put its 11-game unbeaten streak (10-0-1) on the line when it hosts Western Connecticut State University at 7 p.m.  That game will be carried live at www.duckcast.com.
