Sophomore Hillary Paul scored the Ducks first goal in their 2-1 win over Manhattanville.

PURCHASE, N.Y. (October 4, 2006) – Freshman forward Courtney Geddis (Jackson, N.J.) tallied her third game-winning goal of the season as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon.   With the win, the Ducks improved to 7-4 overall, while the Valiants dropped to 0-10 with the loss.

Stevens got on the board midway through the first half when sophomore midfielder Hillary Paul (Concord, N.H.) found a rebounded shot from Geddis and connected with the back of the net after a series of shots saved by Manhattanville sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Gagnon (Staffordville, Conn.).

Manhattanville tied the score at 1-1 at the 28:26 mark with a goal by sophomore forward Abbe Grimes (Hamden, Conn.).  Junior midfielder Kelsey Verrillo (Goilford, Conn.) recorded the initial shot on goal, but sophomore Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, Del.) registered the save on the play.  Grimes picked up the lose ball to tally her third goal of the season.

With four minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore midfielder Alli Shields (Mahopac, N.Y.) found Geddis on the left side after she collected her own rebounded shot.  Geddis sent a rocket past Gagnon to record her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Stevens dominated play in the game and out-shot Manhattanville 28-9.  Smith registered five saves, while Gagnon made 20 for the Valiants.

Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Ithaca College in Empire 8 action.  Game time is slated for noon.
