Women’s Fencing Goes 1-2 in Three Meets at Cornell

Alexis Sowuleski won a team-high six bouts on Sunday at Cornell University.

ITHACA, N.Y. (November 19, 2006) – Freshman Alexis Sowuleski (Little Silver, N.J.) went 6-3 in the epee as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team posted a 1-2 mark in three dual meets on Sunday at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.  The Ducks earned a 19-8 victory over Yeshiva University, suffered a close 15-12 loss to Johns Hopkins University and lost to Cornell by the score of 23-4.  Cornell came in first place with a 3-0 record on the day.

In the epee, Stevens fencers posted a 15-12 overall mark.  Junior Emily Freier (Manalapan, N.J.) and sophomore Rachel Cannell (Asbury, N.J.) both went 4-3.  Meanwhile, senior Colleen Kirk (Churchville, Pa.) collected five victories in the foil.  Senior Maia Hadidi (Lakewood, N.J.) and sophomore Beatrice Wilson (Chatham, N.J.) had three wins apiece in the sabre.

The Ducks will close out the semester on December 3 when they compete in the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association Christmas Invitational, which will be held at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, N.J.  That meet will begin at 8 a.m.
