Field Hockey Upsets Utica in Season-Finale

Sophomore Allison Shields netted her second game-winner to lead Stevens past Utica.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 4, 2006)Sophomore midfielder Allison Shields netted the game-winning goal just 1:56 into the first overtime period to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team past Utica College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Ducks wrapped up their season 11-8 and 3-3 in the league and denied Utica from winning the conference outright.  Stevens also set a new school record for wins in a season with the victory.

The Pioneers got on the board first in the 32nd minute of the game.  Senior defender Amanda Iannello (Verona, N.Y.) sent a pass to sophomore midfielder Sheena Stivers ( Rome, N.Y. ) who collected the goal on the play.

Freshman midfielder Kara Borzillo tied the score, 1-1, with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation.  Sophomore midfielder Hillary Paul sent a pass on the right side to Borzillo, who touched the ball into the left side of the goal for her eighth tally of the season.

 

 

With about 6:30 remaining, sophomore midfielder Kerri Polidore tried to find Borzillo to put the game away, but Polidore's pass just sailed wide of Borzillo's reach.

Shields picked up her second game-winner of the season when she connected on a pass from freshman forward Courtney Geddis.  Geddis finishes up her rookie campaign as the Ducks' leading-scorer with 22 points.

Stevens out-shot Utica 12-8 in the game and held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Sophomore Stephanie Smith finishes the season 11-8 overall and made four saves in the game for Stevens.
