HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 11, 2006) - Senior midfielder Lauren Siegle (Falmouth, ME) and senior attack Becky Meredith (Cockeysville, Md.) scored three goals apiece as Wesleyan College defeated the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team, 12-4, on Saturday morning at DeBaun Field. With the loss Stevens drops to 0-2 while Wesleyan opens up the season 1-0 with the win.
Wesleyan opened the first half scoring three goals in the first eight minutes of play. Siegle and Meredith netted the Cardinals first two goals at 2:35 and 5:46, respectively. Freshman attack Schuyler Swenson (Englewood, Colo.) tallied Wesleyan’s third goal of the game at the eight minute mark. The Cardinals added two more goals within 2:28 to take a 5-0 lead during the first 20 minutes of play.
Freshman midfielder Erinn Hopkins (Monrovia, Md.) put the Ducks on the board at the 28:21 mark, but junior attack Amanda Belichick (Weston, Mass.) answered back less than a minute later to give the Cardinals a 6-1 advantage at the half.
After the break, Stevens scored first when senior defender Malanka Misilo (Short Hills, N.J.) notched her second goal of the season just 2:18 into the second half. Wesleyan tallied the next two goals to take a comfortable 8-2 lead with 20 minutes left to play in the game.
Freshman attack Dana Perriello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied her second goal of the season at the 15:28 mark to cut the Cardinal lead to, 8-3. Wesleyan then scored four straight goals over an 8:40 span to take a commanding 12-3 lead.
Freshman defender Cassidy Callahan (Skaneateles, N.Y.) scored in her second consecutive game with 1:15 left on the clock for Stevens.
Stevens was out-shot by Wesleyan 26-9 and had 28 turnovers in the game.
Sophomore Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J.) made eight saves for the Ducks while junior Kate Jones (Duxbury, Mass.) had three for the Cardinals.
Stevens is back in action on Tuesday, March 14, when it faces Dickinson College at 9 a.m. in West Palm Beach, Fla.
