HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 25, 2006) - Sophomore attack Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) led the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team with four goals and one assist as it defeated Villa Julie College, 12-7, on Saturday afternoon at DeBaun Field. With the win, the Ducks improve to 2-4, while the Mustangs even their record to 4-4 with the loss.
Trailing 7-5 midway through the second half, Stevens netted seven straight goals within the last 16:22 of the game to earn the victory over Villa Julie. Freshman defender Cassidy Callahan (Skaneateles, N.Y.) took the ball coast to coast to start the Ducks’ run. Senior defender Melissa Scott (Barnegat, N.J.) scored with 12:37 remaining to tie the score at 7-all. Freshman midfielder Erinn Hopkins (Monrovia, Md.) totaled the game-winner on an assist by Callahan with 11:39 to play. Mather totaled three of her four goals within a seven-minute span and sophomore attack Joanna Sweetgall (Allendale, N.J.) picked up her second goal of the season as the Ducks continued to pull away.
Sophomore midfielder Cat Connelly (Fallston, Md.) scored first for the Mustangs, as Villa Julie took an early 1-0 lead. Stevens responded with Callahan, Hopkins and Mather each netting their first goals of the game as Stevens took a 3-1 advantage. The Mustangs closed the Ducks lead to one, 3-2, when junior defender Nikki Miller (Glen Burnie, Md.) tallied a goal with 3:05 remaining in the half. Hopkins added her second goal of the day to put Stevens back on top, 4-2. Villa Julie closed out the half with a goal by sophomore midfielder Ashley Cathcart (Reisterstown, Md.).
Stevens picked up 33 ground balls in the game and were successful in 15 out of 18 clears.
Sophomore Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J.) made 13 saves in goal for the Ducks.
Stevens is back in action on Saturday, April 1, when it hosts Manhattanville College at 7:00 p.m.
