HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 3, 2006) - Junior attack Brianna Gillin (Cinnaminson, N.J.) netted five goals and picked up an assist, as Montclair State University defeated the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team, 13-8 on Monday evening at DeBaun Field. With the loss, the Ducks drop to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Red Hawks improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Leading 7-4 at the half, Montclair used a four-goal spurt to take its biggest lead of the night, 11-4. Gillin scored three of the four goals for the Red Hawks during their run. Stevens responded with the next two goals when freshman midfielder Cassidy Callahan (Skaneateles, N.Y.) connected on a free-position shot and sophomore attack Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) added an unassisted tally within 34 seconds of each other. Junior attack Shauna Brocklebank (Long Branch, N.J.) connected on her second goal of the game to put the Red Hawks on top, 12-6 with just over 10 minutes to play. Freshman midfielder Erinn Hopkins (Monrovia, Md.) netted her second score of the day at the 6:58 mark, but freshman attack Marykate DiBenedetto (Cinnaminson, N.J.) answered back 52 seconds later to put Montclair up six with 6:06 to play. Sophomore attack Kaitlyn Roes (Stillwater N.J.) scored the Ducks final goal of the game on a free-position shot at 2:25.
In the first half, Montclair took a quick 3-0 lead within the opening five minutes of the game. Stevens answered back when freshman attack Dana Perriello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Hopkins scored back-to-back goals to bring the Ducks within one, 3-2. Sophomore attack Bethany Blaine (Morrestown, N.J.) put the Red Hawks back on top, 4-2 at the 19:59 mark, but Perriello connected on a pass from Callahan at the 18:03 mark to bring Stevens back to within one.
Montclair junior midfielder Ann Daily (Moorestown, N.J.) and Brocklebank added two goals to give the Red Hawks a 6-3 lead with 5:55 remaining in the half. Roes scored on a pass from Callahan with 21 seconds to go, but Gillin tallied a goal with 5 seconds on the clock to end the half.
Sophomore Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J.) made six saves in goal for the Ducks, while junior Kristin Kuhmann (Beachwood, N.J.) had eight for the Red Hawks.
Stevens is back in action on Wednesday, April 5, when it travels to Union, N.J. to play Kean University at 4:00 p.m.
